Recently I attended the Montana Chapter ICC and Building Codes Conference. I was encouraged to see the diversity of the attendees and the number of courses offered dealing with conservation and energy efficiency. It is apparent that as awareness of necessity for change becomes mainstream, there will be increasing obligation to embrace a more sustainable approach to future development. The downside...how to convince someone developing a new property that the additional 15% to 20% in cost, without assurance of payback or confidence in emerging technology is worth the risk. It's a tough row to hoe. Perhaps a year from now the technology will be 1/2 the cost and 2x the efficiency. Can anyone give me a selling point with confidence.
